GRAB THAT GLASS FIRST!
Drip, drip, drip, drop…the insignificance of that sound, yet the mighty impact it plays in our everyday lives. It is recommended that women take at least 2.7 litres of water a day. This translates to about 5.5 sachets of water, or 4.5 average sized bottles of water.
The importance of drinking clean water cannot be overemphasized, as it plays a huge role in the daily functioning of our body systems. And even more critical is taking a long glass of water first thing in the morning before getting on with the day’s activities.
It’s no news that our bodies are made up of about 60% water, while our brains have over 70%, hence, after almost 8 hours of sleep or 4 hours (for the night crawlers), we wake up with our bodies craving water; and being dehydrated affects us physically and mentally, to say the least.
However, many are not aware about this and grab a cup of coffee or tea to kick start their day, and depending on the nature of jobs for some, it is a bowl of Eba. The first thing we consume in the morning comes as a shock to our fasting bodies, and although this shock is not felt like when current passes through the body after touching a naked wire, it is felt by our brains, nonetheless. If it is water that is taken first, then the shock is much milder.
There are huge benefits to taking water, and even more when it is the opening intake of the day. The overnight build-up of toxins in our systems stand a chance to be flushed out if it is first met with one or two glasses of water, and not a hot cup of dark, brewing coffee. Our bowels are stimulated and hopefully, we can have an easy passage at the restroom.
Secondly, our summer bodies would be more enabled to become a reality when we have an increase in metabolism, thanks to drinking water on an empty stomach. And it happens that the urge to have one more cookie or chocolate bar, or better still, one more puff-puff or chin chin, can be dampened by Simply. Drinking. Water!
Another great benefit of taking sufficient water is that it leads to better skin hydration. Under this harsh climate condition and political regime (#sniffs), we can at least still maintain beauty. It turns out, water helps to serve that purpose too.
Furthermore, it has been shown that not all mood fluctuations are hormonal. Sometimes, it’s simply a result of dehydration. So, the next time you find yourself getting all worked up or cranky, just reach for a glass of water.
Thankfully, it’s not only Milo that fuels our brain and makes it work optimally. With the skyrocketing of food prices in the market, particularly for those of us in Nigeria, in the event where a tin of Milo or our favourite beverage seem out of reach, we would still be able to reach for a bottle or a sachet of water, as being hydrated is helpful in maintaining optimal brain activity. And an optimal brain is a highly valued asset. Amen somebody?
And lastly, for the team ‘natural hair babes’, and the team ‘I-cannot-come-and-go-and-kill-myself’, water is a friend of all, as it ensures that the roots of our hair are not dry, rough and brittle. It helps to transport vitamins that is needed for that shine and healthy look, whether relaxed, natural or on a low-cut.
No matter how we look at it, drinking sufficient water is a win-win for all. And taking it first thing in the morning, serves us even better. So, grab that glass first! (And hopefully, its content would be water).
“I-cannot-come-and-go-and-kill-myself”- Nigerian lingo which means, I don’t really care.
